The experience

What visiting Vimy Ridge is really like

You turn off the D55 onto the Chemin des Canadiens and drive through pine and maple planted by Canadian schoolchildren, one tree for each of the fallen. Arriving between 10:00 and 12:00 gives you the best chance of a place on a guided tunnel and trench walk, which fills quickly in summer.

Read more Show less

You park at the visitor education centre and pay nothing — entry is free, 0 EUR, and the doors open at 10:00 on every day except Monday, when the site opens at 12:00. You put your name down for a tunnel slot first, then walk the exhibition while you wait. A student guide collects the group and leads you down into the Grange Subway, where the chalk walls hold carved regimental badges and initials scratched by men waiting to go up.

Back in daylight, you follow the duckboards through the reconstructed trenches and stop where the opposing lines almost touch. The sheep barely look up. Fenced ground on either side stays closed for a reason.

Then you climb the last rise to the monument itself. You read names for as long as you can stand to, and you find the mourning figure on the eastern face looking down over the Douai plain. Groups on vimy ridge tours from arras often turn back here; you take the extra ten minutes and walk the full perimeter instead.

Vimy Ridge Tours Across Two Battlefields

Vimy Ridge tours centre on Hill 145, where Walter Allward's twin white pylons and the carved figure of Canada Bereft rise above the Douai plain, with preserved trench lines, shell craters and the chalk galleries of the Grange Subway all within walking distance of the visitor centre. Most itineraries continue south to Somme landmarks including the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial, the Thiepval arch and Lochnagar Crater, so two sectors of the Western Front fit into one route. A full-day vimy ridge tours tour, sold locally as a visite de la crête de Vimy, runs by minibus from Arras, which saves changing trains or hiring a car.

France gave the 100 hectares of Hill 145 to Canada in perpetuity, and the ground has never been returned.

That grant, made in 1922, explains why the crest above Givenchy-en-Gohelle is administered from Ottawa rather than Arras, and why the site carries no entrance fee: admission to the memorial and visitor education centre is 0 EUR.

The four divisions of the Canadian Corps fought here together for the first time in April 1917, taking a ridge that had defeated earlier assaults. Walter Seymour Allward spent eleven years building the monument that marks it, quarrying Seget limestone from a disused Roman site in Croatia. The twin pylons rise thirty metres, one bearing the maple leaf, one the fleur-de-lys. Around them stand twenty allegorical figures, and 11,285 names are cut into the walls — Canadian soldiers killed in France with no known grave.

What distinguishes vimy ridge tours from other stops on the Western Front is how little has been smoothed over. The lawns are grazed by sheep because unexploded ordnance still makes mechanical mowing unwise. Craters left by underground mine warfare pit the ground in overlapping bowls. Sandbagged trench lines were reconstructed in concrete during the 1930s, but they follow the original traces, and at the closest point the Canadian and German front lines are separated by a few strides.

Below ground runs the Grange Subway, part of a network of tunnels cut into soft chalk to move troops forward unseen. Sections are open to guided groups only, led by Canadian student guides who work the site on rotation — a programme running since the 1990s. Demand for the Vimy Ridge guided walk is heaviest in July and August, and vimy ridge tunnel tours are allocated on the day.

The memorial sits within easy reach of several bases. Vimy ridge tours from arras cover barely twelve kilometres; vimy ridge tours from lille take under an hour; vimy ridge tours from paris usually run as long day trips via the A1. Pilgrimage traffic arriving as vimy ridge tours from canada peaks around 9 April, the anniversary of the assault.

Restored and rededicated in 2007 after a major conservation programme, the monument is now the most visited Canadian site outside the country. Its address — Route départementale 55, Chemin des Canadiens, 62580 Givenchy-en-Gohelle — places it above a plain of slag heaps and beet fields, the landscape those men were sent to cross.

The lawns are grazed by sheep because unexploded ordnance still makes mechanical mowing unwise.

The story

The Historical Context of Vimy Ridge Tours

Elevation explains everything here. From the crest at 145 metres, an observer commands the Douai plain and the coalfields beyond it. France assaulted the ridge in May and September 1915 and failed to hold the summit, at a cost counted in tens of thousands. British divisions relieved that sector in 1916. Those who come for vimy ridge tours walk ground that two armies had already failed to win. The Canadian Corps took over in October 1916 under Lieutenant-General Sir Julian Byng, with Major-General Arthur Currie shaping the method. Every platoon rehearsed on taped ground behind the lines. Nearly a thousand guns registered German batteries for weeks. Twelve subways, some more than a kilometre long, carried troops forward through the chalk. The assault opened at 5:30 a.m. on Easter Monday, 9 April 1917, behind a creeping barrage. Hill 145 fell on 10 April; the Pimple on 12 April. Canadian dead numbered 3,598. The Grange Subway still forms the underground spine of vimy ridge tours tours. France ceded 100 hectares to Canada in perpetuity in 1922. Walter Seymour Allward, a Toronto sculptor, had won the memorial competition the previous year. Construction began in 1925 and consumed eleven years. Allward spent two of them searching for stone, settling on Seget limestone from a disused Roman quarry on the Dalmatian coast. Beneath the twin pylons lies a bed of some 11,000 tonnes of concrete. Canada Bereft was carved from a single block. The walls carry 11,285 names of Canadians killed in France with no known grave, the sombre core of any vimy ridge tours tour. King Edward VIII unveiled the monument on 26 July 1936 before roughly six thousand Canadian pilgrims. Its survival was not certain. German forces occupied the ridge in June 1940 and rumours of demolition circulated widely; the monument was instead photographed, guarded and left standing. A restoration ran from 1997 to 2007, and Queen Elizabeth II rededicated the site on 9 April 2007. Free vimy ridge tours tickets reflect a memorial never intended to be sold. Sheep still graze craters fenced off for unexploded ordnance, and visitors booking circuits de la crête de Vimy find the same preserved trench lines.

Quiet morning on the ridge

We booked one of the small-group vimy ridge tours out of Arras and the drive through the beet fields set the mood well before we arrived. Walter Allward's pylons are far larger in person than any photograph suggests, and the wind across the plateau cuts straight through a light jacket even in July. Our guide kept the group small enough that everyone could hear inside the Grange Subway.

Grass still buckled

The ground below the monument still ripples with craters, fenced off and kept short by sheep, and that image stayed with me far longer than anything else. A Vimy Ridge memorial tour moves through the trench lines in slow single file, so nobody is pushed along. Bring something warm regardless of the forecast.

Worth the extra stop

We added Beaumont-Hamel and Lochnagar Crater to the day, which made for a lot of driving but a much fuller picture of the Somme. The Newfoundland caribou looks out over ground that has never been levelled flat again. My only complaint was a minibus with no working air conditioning on a warm afternoon.

Chalk underfoot

Descending into the tunnels the temperature drops noticeably and the smell of damp chalk hits you at once. The explanation of how the mine galleries were cut was clear without becoming a lecture. Sorting our vimy ridge tours tickets in advance meant we walked straight to the meeting point instead of waiting at the visitor centre.

Names on the walls

Reading the names carved around the base takes far longer than you plan for, and most of our group went silent doing it. The Canadian student guides answered questions patiently and never rushed anyone. Parking was straightforward and the site felt uncrowded on a weekday.

Fog then sun

We arrived in low fog and the pylons only appeared when we were almost at the plaza, which felt oddly right. Several vimy ridge tours tours pair the memorial with the smaller Commonwealth cemeteries nearby, and those quiet plots put the scale into proportion. By midday the fog had burned off and the Douai plain opened up below the ridge.

Sheep and craters

Hard to convey how quiet the plateau becomes once the coaches pull away. Canada Bereft, the mourning figure facing east over the plain, is the detail I keep returning to months later. Comfortable shoes matter more than anything else you pack.

Rushed at the end

The site was worth the trip out from Arras and our guide knew the 1917 offensive very well. We lost time in traffic and the underground section ended up feeling hurried. Fine overall, though I would look for a smaller group next time.

More than a monument

I expected a single monument and found an entire landscape that has never been ploughed flat again. Guided vimy ridge tours from Lille made the day easy without a car, and the driver pointed out the slag heaps and the Douai plain from the ridge line. The white stone against a summer sky is something I did not expect to find so moving.
